INTRODUCTION TO MANGA PHILOSOPHY

Two-Day Workshop on Manga & Anime as Art
28 March — 29 March

Learning Objectives:
—By the end of this workshop, participants will:
—Gain a basic understanding of the history and evolution of manga and anime
—Explore manga and anime as artistic and cultural expressions
—Develop skills to analyze visual storytelling, including themes, characters, and narrative techniques
—Reflect on the social, philosophical, and cultural messages within selected works
—Strengthen critical thinking and group discussion skills

DAY 1:
Introductory Lecture (20 minutes): An overview of the history of manga and anime, exploring their development and significance as artistic and cultural forms.

Screening Session: Viewing selected works followed by discussions

DAY 2:
Group Discussions: Participants reflect on and analyze the works viewed on Day 1.
Structured Topics: Several discussion themes will be prepared in advance to guide conversation.
Breakout Sessions: Participants will form small groups and engage in focused discussions.

About the Facilitator:
Kazuya Horibe is a researcher studying how intelligent behavior and communication can emerge from simple systems. He works at the RIKEN Center for Brain Science in Japan, where he explores topics such as artificial life, complex systems, and autonomous agents.
His work combines ideas from biology, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science to better understand how living systems and intelligent machines learn, adapt, and interact with the world.
